WOLF-Garten® Interlocken DAS Crumbler and Soil Cultivator: Product Review

The WOLF-Garten® Crumbler and Soil Cultivator is a lightweight yet sturdy tool that does a good job of loosening topsoil and hoeing small weeds. It consists of a 4-tined rotary cultivator with a stirrup hoe attachment that makes it even more effective and is a welcome addition to what would’ve otherwise been “just another cultivator.” Note that the cultivator/hoe is sold separately from the handle (pole) as part of WOLF-Garten’s Interlocken® system of interchangeable tools Continue Reading

FreedomWeeder: Product Review

The FreedomWeeder is a 44-inch tube that you fill with liquid herbicide (of your choice). It has a spot applicator tip on the bottom to target individual weeds, an attached hand pump sprayer for broader application, and a “drizzle” cap to pour contents. The tube is long enough that you don’t have to bend over to apply the weed killer (your back will thank you!). And I love the option to use the sprayer when Continue Reading

Corona DiscCULTIVATOR (LG 3634): Product Review

The DiscCULTIVATOR from Corona is a long-handled, multi-tined rotary cultivator that does a good job loosening the top layer of soil, breaking up clumps, spreading amendments and weeding around plants. For regular bed preparation and weed control, this is a terrific, flexible and ergonomic tool. It’s sturdy but lightweight, has a comfortable handle that absorbs vibration, and the tines come off and on fairly easily to give you multiple widths and tine configurations. Continue Reading

Bernzomatic Lawn and Garden Torch (JT850)/Flame Weeder: Product Review

The Bernzomatic Lawn and Garden Torch effectively kills stubborn weeds in sidewalk cracks and other hard-to-manage areas without bending, crouching or getting your hands dirty. Control is longer lasting than with weed whacking, far less effort than manual weed removal, and doesn’t use toxic chemical weedkillers. The torch is lightweight and easy to handle. The downside is that it relies on propane and flame, albeit in small amounts, which presents some risk. Continue Reading

Corona WeedDESTROYER: Product Review

The Corona WeedDESTROYER is meant for tough weed removal and is built sturdy for this task. I like that the ejection spring is encased in the shaft, rather than exposed, and the large toe plate allows you to get your full weight behind it when weeding in hard or compacted soil. However, I did not find that it removes larger weeds any better than many of its lighter competitors, and the toe plate is so Continue Reading

Garden Weasel Rotary Cultivator: Product Review

The Garden Weasel is used to loosen topsoil, prepare beds by mixing soil or added organic matter, and prepare bare areas of lawn for seeding. The width can be easily adjusted by removing one or two of the three tines, making it flexible enough to use in many different situations. It’s lightweight, rust-resistant and simple to use – just place the head on the ground and roll it back and forth. Continue Reading

Sun Joe Lithium-Ion 40-volt 12-inch Cordless Tiller + Cultivator: Product Review

Don't be fooled by its toy-like looks - the Sun Joe tiller + cultivator is a real workhorse! Lightweight, maneuverable, and compact, it's ideal for anyone with a smaller garden or limited storage space (the fold-down handles are a plus!). It's extremely quiet (making it great for those living with neighbors nearby or with strict noise pollution standards), incredibly easy to use, and the sharp blades and power easily turn hard soil into something your Continue Reading

Dirty Little Digger: Product Review

The Dirty Little Digger is a versatile tool that combines the functions of several tools into one comfortable, easy-to-use implement. From chores that require a delicate touch, like weeding around transplants, to others that require a sturdy hand, like transferring mulch or compost, Dirty Little Digger is one tool for your gardening tool bag that can and will replace several others. It would make a good holiday gift too! Continue Reading
