The Ars tool came pre-lubricated and ready for immediate use. The first time using it, I spent about 30 minutes trimming down some shrubs in my front yard. I found it a joy to use aside from one minor issue of the blades getting stuck together periodically as I was working (this only happened when cutting some of the thicker branches). While worrisome at first, hindsight now 20/20, the tool was actually not broken in yet, and this was a relatively thorough pruning session with some thick branches.
It's very easy to use. You can lock it into place by pressing a little notch upward. You can conveniently unlock it again by just squeezing the handles as if you were cutting.
It's also very comfortable to use.The black handle rotates, very helpful on my hands when I needed to squeeze tightly to be able to cut some of the thicker branches. There is a spring that compresses as you squeeze the handles when you prune. And I really liked how the tool felt in my hands, the handles are very smooth feeling.
The blades will cut through just about any reasonably sized (finger width) branch you throw at it. Very clean cuts, and most of the time effortlessly.
Overall, a great, strong, and easy to use tool. Made in Japan, which I'm guessing adds to the price tag. Is it worth the premium? If you appreciate a quality tool and plan to keep it for a lifetime, I truly think it will be a great investment.
2015 Update ARS HP-VS8R VS Bahco PXR-M2
________________________________________
I recently purchased the Bahco PXR-M2 as a gift for my mother, who loves gardening in her spare time. This is basically Bahco's version of this ARS VS8R tool, rotating handle and medium size. The Bahco's build quality is right up there with the Ars unit. The Bahco does have a more preferably matte finish on the handles, and the Bahco does "look" like the higher quality/better tool to me in person. The Bahco is made in France and is also a pricey tool like this one... But looks/quality aside, I think the Ars is easier on the hands to use, and its rotating handle and locking mechanism are implemented better. Overall, the Ars tool is the slightly better tool in my opinion,

I had initially rated this tool 4 stars mainly due to cost, but now after two years and no trouble, I feel this has now proven to be a 5 star pruner.

I had initially rated this tool 4 stars mainly due to cost, but now after two years and no trouble, I feel this has now proven to be a 5 star pruner.
Ease of use is another standout feature of this pruner. Its ergonomically friendly design ensures a comfortable grip, allowing for extended periods of use without any discomfort. In my own experience, I've managed to use the pruner continuously for more than four hours without wearing gloves, and there were no issues with blisters or strain. This speaks volumes about the thoughtful design and the user-centric approach incorporated in its creation.
For those who possess the ability to maintain and sharpen tools themselves, the ARS pruner is an absolute treasure. With regular upkeep, this pruner can serve you indefinitely, making it a purchase worth every penny.
On the downside, a word of warning to those who aren't particularly inclined towards tool maintenance - the value of this pruner lies significantly in its longevity, which is directly related to proper care.
In conclusion, the ARS pruner emerges as a commendable product that deserves high praise. It's not just a tool; it's a lifelong gardening companion that makes even the most tedious pruning tasks somewhat bearable. If you are looking for a reliable, user-friendly, and long-lasting pruning tool, this is definitely worth considering.
the spring mechanism still works too. i havent oiled the rotating handle tough since bought, still works.
i use these hand prunners for small to medium sized vines. if you are pruning a vine variety that has thick spurs with vigourous growth your hand is going to get tired and will hurt. You are not going to grasp the entire spurs. in that case use good loppers.
another important feature to look in prunners is that they make a clean, close cut. these are ok.
today is the first day i tested these, while spur pruning i thought these arent gonna cut it. i think it has something to do with gloves. when i took my glove off they felt much better while pruning the blade seems sharp. i didnt even sharpen it the whole day. just right off the package no sharpening at all. they seemed to get stuck (blades) more than a couple of times. it might have to do with the clasp that opens and closes. they fit my hand very good. i have medium hands. wear medium gloves. the rotating handle seems to be made of some kind of hard plastic. got scratched easily on one side. i let someone borrow it for a minute said they were light. there isnt really a sap groove but after i was done with them all the gunk came right off. not that there was much. at times these cut really fast almost like if wherever i touched in a spur it would cut easily. all in all i dont really care for the squeeze to open feature. because i think it get stuck. i prefer to the blade not to get stuck as my first and foremost priority so i can focus on cutting rather than getting these unstuck. didnt have problems with the spring. overall i like these and will continue to prune with these.
