Product Description
Product Description
Are you still struggling to keep the water on the yd & off the drive? then the XT4200 has the precision you need. This sprinkler adds another dimension of adjustability with an integrated flow control dial for precision water adjustments. Need to water a large area? you can do it with this sprinkler with its large 4, 000 square' of coverage which isup to 75' long x 53' wide almost the size of a basketball Court! you can use the range control to reduce the coverage from the maximum 75' length down to only 15' long by sliding the range control levers. You can also position the pattern left, right or center using the range control levers. Not everyone has a yd this large though, so this sprinkler has the ability to adjust both the length as well as the width of its watering pattern. The width adjustment is a Melnor exclusive with the patented one-touch system which allows you to adjust the width from its maximum of 53' to a minimum of 20' by simply moving a lever up or down. Have the overall pattern right, but just need a little more, or a little less coverage? then use the integrated flow control knob that acts like a Zoom to grow or Shrink the whole pattern. So whether your yd is large, small, or somewhere in the middle, this sprinkler has you covered!

With a two-stage, long-life turbo-drive motor, Melnor's turbo oscillator has adjustable coverage that can vary from 874 to 3,900 square feet (maximum coverage is 58 by 68 feet). Adjusting the range or width is wonderfully easy--simply slide the yellow controls to manage your coverage. With flow control for fine adjustment, the sprinkler has 18 rubber reverse-trumpet nozzles, six of which have positive shutoff. Limited warranty.

Having the three adjusters (water pressure, left to right sweep arc, and north to south pass width) is really nice since no day is exactly like another. A sight breeze really effects this type of sprinkler, which messed up the spray pattern. Being able to adjust each direction allows you to compensate for those changes easily. And learning how to use those adjustments takes very little time.
The only complaint I'd have is that I wish it was heavier. Because it's fairly lightweight, it tends to get bullied by the hose if the hose isn't laid out quite right. That means that one edge of the sprinkler might lift up and cause the fan to spray in a way that wasn't desired. Just checking on the fan when you first turn it on will tell you how well the sprinkler is sitting though so this is a minor inconvenience.
I've also noticed in one of my older Melnor (about 3 years old) that 3 of the 4 plastic sweep width levers have been baked by UV and have broken off in my hand when trying to adjust. So my concern is that the tabs are just too small for what they need to do. It might be wise to spray that mechanism with WD40 periodically. I'd also be concerned if you have to leave your sprinklers out year round. I only have mine out in the spring before our irrigation water is turned on and in the fall after it's turned off for the winter. I imagine leaving these out in the intenser sunlight all summer would really damage the plastic quickly.
So far I've bought three of these sprinklers and when I need another, I'll be back. I may try the metal versions next time though. We'll see!

Working fine after two years of disconnecting and bringing the sprinkler onto the screened porch.
Update one year:
My plan of keeping this second sprinkler INSIDE has worked perfectly. The sprinkler was like brand new this spring when I put it out the first time, and it's been working like brand new so far this summer. I do NOT leave this outside, but take it off the hose immediately, let it drain and then bring it into the screened porch, out of the sun and the dirt. Read below about why I do that:
Original review:
I am RELUCTANTLY ordering another of this same model. Bought the first one last summer and was VERY happy with operation and design, but this spring the thin width control (yellow loop-like tabs in the middle of the tube) snapped right off because they had become brittle and are designed so dust can get inside and make them hard to adjust. I might expect that if I had left this out in the sun all year, but I protected it from the sun anytime it was not in use, albeit outside.
I'm giving the product a second chance because:
1. I loved the way it worked and adjusted easily and I can't find anything that looks like it would work better. Sadly there is no ALL METAL version... I would pay double for one.
2. Even if they only last one year, I feel like it's worth the hassle and cost of replacement rather than the hassle and time required to constantly move the sprinkler and try to make it get all the corners and crannies.
3. I'm hoping that by removing the unit and bringing it inside, perhaps dirt and dust won't get into the oscillating slide and make it hard to move.
Yes, I see there are cheaper versions of this model, but I feel like the metal base and the brass hose fitting make it worth the $6 extra. This year I will disconnect the sprinkler anytime not in use and bring it inside, protecting it from sun, dust and freezing. If this technique works for me I will increase the rating.
I just can't stand the thought of paying half as much for a sprinkler that requires me to go outside and move it every hour simply because it sprays a smaller area or is circular and can't get the corners of the yard.
I hate sprinklers. Even automatic ones. I hate moving hoses or turning them on and off each time I move to a new area. The automatics save you having to think about them, but there is always something going wrong. When that happens it's not just a matter of buying a new one, you're out there digging and working in the mud. Hate it, but want green grass.
