Composts are an essential part of the growing process for any vegetable garden, helping to renew soil, provide essential nutrients, and give soil structure. Using compost in my vegetable garden has always felt very natural and positive to me, which is why I’m excited to write this article about the 6 best composts for vegetable […]
Plants love to grow in soil that’s nutrient-rich, biologically active, and well structured. Regularly adding compost to your soil is the best way to ensure that your soil can provide an excellent growing environment for your vegetable garden or flower patch for many seasons. Compost is usually the first purchase I make in anticipation of […]
Roses are among the most rewarding flowers to grow, if you ask me. We all know how beautiful they look when they bloom and how great they smell. And, best of all, they can grow really quickly if you provide them with the proper growing environment. In this article, we’re going to get deep into […]
If you have weeds, tall grass where it doesn’t belong, or hard-to-clear areas around your yard, look no further. This cordless Craftsman trimmer is light-weight (10.2 lbs), simple to use, adjustable, highly maneuverable, and very reasonably priced. With 60V of power, it has the oomph needed to whack through thicker grass and weeds, and I was easily able to trim my 1-acre lot with only a single charge. The battery isn’t as heavy as 120V models, the trimmer is nicely balanced and it’s not too tiring to use for extended weed whacking sessions (which is good, because it doesn’t have a shoulder sling). Oh, and it’s a Craftsman.
The AeroGarden Bounty Elite is an exceptionally easy-to-use countertop garden that includes everything you need to produce a bountiful crop of hydroponic herbs, veggies or flowers in a small space. The clear instructions make set-up a breeze and the LCD panel lets you monitor and control everything you need to keep the system running smoothly. The LED light panel emits a bright white light (not purple like some LED grow lights) and the liquid plant food provides all the nutrients your plants will need.
At the end of each year, the Gardening Products Review takes a close look at all of the products we’ve reviewed that year. We then award up to five products with the Golden Shovel Award for outstanding garden product. Here are the 2018 winners!
Each year brings a ton of new features to the gardening tools and outdoor power equipment market.
This year we’re seeing a continuation of many recent trends as the number of both younger (Millennial) and older gardeners increases, such as a focus on convenience, longer life, improved technology, ergonomic design and smaller size.
In this article, we share some of the features to look for in 2018 and highlight newly-introduced garden/outdoor products that are worth considering.
Compact, practical and easy to use, this electric leaf shredder easily reduced 18 wheelbarrows full of leaves into a nice, tidy pile of organic mulch.
Don’t be fooled by its toy-like looks – the Sun Joe tiller + cultivator is a real workhorse! Lightweight, maneuverable, and compact, it’s ideal for anyone with a smaller garden or limited storage space (the fold-down handles are a plus!). It’s extremely quiet (making it great for those living with neighbors nearby or with strict noise pollution standards), incredibly easy to use, and the sharp blades and power easily turn hard soil into something your plants would be proud to grow in.
The A.M. Leonard GardenGlide is a nifty and unique item with almost limitless uses for transporting garden items. I was impressed with the loads it could handle, the ease at which it slid across a wide range of surfaces, and the abuse it withstood when pushing it to extremes. The one improvement I’d recommend is to make the handle sturdier – it was uncomfortable pulling heavy loads with a bent handle. Bottom line, I liked this useful product and highly recommend it.
Strong yet lightweight, tough and well balanced, the uniquely-shaped Rock’n Root Trowel is ideal for many gardening chores, especially in tight spaces. With a lifetime guarantee, this tool is a great value for the price of only $20.00.
The Golden Gark (distributed by The Root Assassin—“Unique Garden Tools That Work”) is promoted as a 3-in-1 tool: rake, shovel, and sifter. It costs more than your ordinary plastic leaf rake, your garden variety—pun intended—metal garden rake, or your typical pond skimmer. But having tested it rigorously, my search for a leaf (and medium duty garden rake) and pond skimmer that will last longer than one season is over!
When you need to remove fallen leaves from your lawn or garden, a combination leaf blower, vacuum and mulcher is a convenient option. The difficulty is finding a combination blower/vac/mulcher that works well in all three modes. We tested the BV3600 high performance model from Black & Decker – here’s what we found …
