Most gardeners manage to accumulate a shed full of tools throughout their lifetimes, but within that cache of tools, only a few are truly worth owning. Good tools make any job easier, so when I come across a tool that really does the trick, it moves up the list of “must have” tools.

I’ve been making some pretty drastic changes to my little corner lot and good tools have been essential. In the last few months I have removed (chemically free) almost 5,000 sq.ft. of Bermuda grass to plant trees, shrubs, perennials, and beds and beds of annual cut flowers for market. One tool, the PRO Stainless Edger by Radius Garden, has made the job of edging simple and flawless.

Radius Garden PRO Edger - new tool

I was able to easily cut clean edges to create my pathways and planting beds without the back strain.

The Task

As a landscape designer venturing into the world of cut flowers, I wanted to make my urban cut flower garden with a design flair. I was not going to have rows and rows of flowers if it didn’t have some kind of designer touch that would fit into my neighborhood. By using the PRO Edger, I was able to easily cut clean edges to create my pathways and planting beds without the back strain.

The PRO Edger harks back to the days when garden and lawn maintenance was performed by gardeners without the noisy power tools employed by the mow and blow gangs. It is easy to use and its steel shaft makes it the strong tool all gardeners need.

 The Details

The folks over at Radius Garden (radiusgarden.com) have designed garden tools that make gardening easier on the body. The PRO Edger boasts a non-breakable steel shaft, a stainless steel blade with a generous stepping edge, and their patented O-Handle grip that you can easily get both hands on. It’s a different-looking design that’s designed to relieve arm, hand, and wrist stress.

The stainless steel blade is 9 inches wide and 5 inches deep allowing for deep cutting. I was able to cut clean edges through Bermuda grass and into clay soil quickly and easily.

The PRO Edger measures a total of 38 inches from the tip of the blade to the top of the handle, and it weighs 3 lbs. 11 ozs.

Using the PRO Edger and the Results

The PRO Edger cuts through clay soil to make a straight edge.

Makes Both Straight Lines and Curves

To get the best results out of my edging efforts, I pulled a string from one end of the bed to the other to keep a straight line. Then I placed the tip of the blade at the line and stepped firmly down on the stepping edge to make the first cut.

Even curves are easily cut with the PRO Edger.

This process was repeated to get a long straight edge.

For the designer touch, I wanted to include some shapes into the cut flower garden. Using the PRO Edger, curves were added with ease.

The final planting beds turned out to be spectacular with clean, deep edges.

No Backaches

It took very little time to make this bed with the PRO Edger, and I could stand up straight with no backaches or arm aches once the job was done.

The stepping edge on the blade is wide enough to prevent your foot from hurting after making a day’s worth of cuts.

Keep it Sharp

As with any digging tool, it’s a good idea to sharpen the edge after you’ve used it for a while. Depending on the type of soil you’re digging in, the edge will dull over time, requiring more effort to cut through grass and ground cover.
