The new Ratchet Drive Anvil Lopper seems to be well made, but cutting with it is a nightmare. I've never had to apply so much pressure to the handles of a similarly sized lopper in my life! The ratchet operates, but the tool just won't cut! I've carefully examined the cutting blade and anvil itself and can't figure out why the tools requires so much physical strength to cut branches. Well, it will cut small branches, but I've always reserved using ratchet loppers for cutting branches 1-2" in diameter. I currently own two other ratchet loppers that are 32 and 36" in length. They are much heavier in weight than the Fiskars Ratchet Lopper, but the ratchets in them do make cutting large branches easier. The ratchet in the Fiskars anvil lopper seems to make cutting more difficult than easier.
Do I use loppers much? Yes, I maintain about 800 trees and shrubs that I have planted on our 20 acre property. I've tried Corona, Gilmour, Wolf Garten, Worth, Florian, and other loppers. The Fiskars Ratchet Lopper is reasonably priced and much less expensive than some others I own, but it is the poorest tool of the bunch for cutting larger branches. And, for cutting smaller branches, there are many better choices, including the 18" Fiskars Power Gear Anvil Lopper. The currently available Gilmour 26 or 27" anvil lopper is a viable tool for cutting larger branches for similar money to the Fiskars Ratchet Lopper, and it works. The drawback with current Gilmour loppers is that their quality has dropped noticeably during the past decade or so.
I realize loppers often are sold with a lifetime guarantee; however, the hassle of packing a lopper and the price of shipping it back to a warranty address for me doesn't appeal. Also, when I've misused the tool and caused it to fail that isn't the fault of the manufacturer. However, it's pretty easy to snap the cutting blade of the current Gilmour 27" anvil lopper. And, yes I do use a small Stihl chainsaw for part of my pruning work. I have considerable money invested in pruning tools, but I expect them to work! The Fiskars Ratchet Drive Anvil Lopper does NOT do the job for which its designed.
